A traditional firm with a modern approach
Called to the Bar in 1979, I specialised in general Chancery work e.g. wills, trusts, land law, taxation etc. I wrote a standard work on international tax problems: "US/UK Double Taxation" and was Development Land Tax editor of "Butterworth's Land Development Encyclopaedia."
I have also used my legal expertise in politics and business. As an MP, I was a member of the Finance Bill Committee for many years, giving detailed consideration to the annual tax changes proposed in the Budget. As Corporate Affairs Minister, I was responsible for all the legal and regulatory work of the Dept of Trade & Industry, especially Company Law, Insolvency, Insider Dealing, Disqualification of Directors, Companies Acts Investigations, Competition Law (including Monopolies & Mergers) etc.
In business, I have been a partner in a firm advising companies on competition issues and Chairman of a recruitment company, advising inter alia on employment law problems.
I particularly enjoy personal contact with clients, advising on matters such as estate planning, wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney and working with them to formulate long-term inheritance tax planning strategies both in a personal and business context to minimise the depredations of excessive taxation and an uncertain political world.
I assist clients in the whole range of estate administration matters from providing a responsive and efficient service in more straightforward estates through to advising on more complex estates requiring consideration of business or agricultural property relief, complex trust arrangements, post-death variations etc. I also work with our litigation team on claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and other contentious trust and probate work.
Recognising that everyone’s circumstances are different, I take the time to explore each client’s individual aims, priorities and concerns, in order to make (or update) lifetime arrangements that best suit each individual. I believe in guiding them through the labyrinth of the law in a practical and straightforward way, delivering technical advice with empathy and pragmatism to advise on their best interests.
